Check Out Some of the Most Asked Questions About Tires and Auto Repairs 

The following are some of the most frequently asked questions about tires and auto repairs and maintenance. 

  • What is the proper air pressure for my tires?
    Tire pressure varies greatly for different vehicles. Most cars produced since 1968 list the original tire size and inflation pressure (including the spare tire) on a vehicle place card. This place card is usually located on the driver-side door-to-door jamb (Ford vehicles list this information on the rear passenger door jamb), glove box door, fuel door or engine compartment. Truck tire pressure varies by the load the vehicle is carrying; however, you can locate a general pressure in the truck’s manual. Always check your tire pressure after the tires have had time to cool down (before driving is the best time).
  • Why is it important to rotate my tires?
    Most of today’s cars are either front-wheel or four-wheel drive. This is wonderful for traction, but hard on tires. If we rotate tires we will keep the rears from cupping, and the fronts from wearing too fast. We recommend rotation every 5,000 miles or every 2 oil changes.
  • Why do some tires cost more than others?
    In every class of tires you will find a wide range of pricing. Some tires last longer, some have more traction, some are of higher performance. Your tire professional is the best person to discuss what sort of tire is right for your needs.
  • When should I replace my vehicle's tires?
    The head of a penny is about 1/16 of an inch, which is the same as the wear bars on most tires. If you do not have the same feel when driving in the rain or in the turns, you may need to replace your tires.
  • My tires have waves in the sidewall. Are the tires bad?
    Side wall plies have joints that overlap. The taller the sidewall, the more you will notice the dent or wavy look of the sidewall. If you ever see a knot or bubble in the sidewall, replace the tire at once.
  • Should I use special tires for my SUV?
    The high center of gravity, along with the added weight of four-wheel drive creates new challenges for SUV tires. Some SUVs need mud traction while others just need good road manners. Look for the tire that will do the best job for your needs. Select a tire that is designed for your SUV.
  • How can I find out what wheels will fit my vehicle?
    Wheels come in two main groups: car, which is FWD, or truck and SUV, which will be RWD. This is a good time to look at plus-one, -two or -three sizes to help you perform to the max. Remember shorter sidewalls will ride stiffer.
  • How does the weather affect my tires?
    Weather is always a concern to your tires. Hot weather can be hard on the tire itself, while cold weather will cause your tires to have less air. Rain, snow, and ice are traction robbers, and you will need good tires to take them all on.
  • Can I change the size of my tires?
    Yes, you can go to a larger tire and wheel on almost every application. But between the computers, antilock brakes, and fender openings, this is a job best left to professionals. You must also look at the tire's ability to carry the load of the car. With work, you can make your car look better and handle much better.
  • How do I properly care for and clean my tires?
    Tires bloom as they age. The use of tire shine products that draw the oils out of the tire will cause the tire to crack or crust on the exposed side. Simple soap and water, with a little scrubbing on the whites, will keep your tires looking like new for years.
  • Is the alignment of the vehicle important?
    Yes, the alignment of your vehicle is very important. When all four wheels are properly aligned, the tires work together more effectively; therefore resulting in better performance in handling, steering, fuel economy and most importantly the tires will wear more evenly and last longer. The alignment should be inspected annually and corrected without delay. Other times to check alignment: after hitting pot hole/ curb, or if the vehicle is drifting/ pulling to one side or if the steering wheel is off center.
  • I want to only purchase 2 tires. Where should I put them?
    If proper rotation has not been maintained you might only need to purchase 2 tires. In this case you would want to place the 2 new (or highest tread tires) on the rear of the vehicle.
  • My vehicle is not running right, and I have lit lights on my instrument panel. What should I do?
    When you drive a vehicle and you notice changes in how the vehicle is running or handling you should have it checked out by a certified mechanic. Lit lights on your instrument panel should be immediately looked at: these are your warning signals that something is wrong. Delay in diagnosing the problem could cause further more costly repairs.
  • Should I change the oil even though I have not driven 3000 miles?
    It is recommended to change your oil every 3000-5000 miles depending on the type of oil your vehicle uses. It is also recommended to change your oil every 6 months for vehicles not driven very often. Oil is lubricant for your engine, when oil is not moved though out the system it settles and can draw moisture from the outside temperature changes and becomes less effective resulting in your engine to run improperly.
  • I have lost my “key” to my locking lug nuts. Can you help?
    For various reasons the “key” to the locking lug nuts is lost. We can get the lug nuts off.
  • I need multiple repairs on my vehicle but cannot afford to get all the repairs done at once. What do I do?

  • Retrieving codes for a lit engine light can be done at local part stores. Why should I pay to have a diagnostic complete?
    Retrieving a code is not hard, but knowing how to trace that code and pin point the actual problem requires years of training and up to date tools made for your specific vehicle. Untrained diagnosis could lead to unnecessary repairs costing you more money in the long run.
